The Outlook Program assists youth in Burnaby who at the present time are disconnected from local mainstream or alternate programs in the public school system. The program provides a wraparound educational day program service with individualized education plans where youth can work at their own pace and level. In addition, there is a family support component, outreach services, social and life skills training and access to counselling services. As well, the Outlook staff promote community contacts and access to other services, provide some transportation including bus passes and meals. Youth are enrolled in the program for 4 to 6 months with extensions possible based on individual needs.
The objectives of the Outlook Program are to:
- provide accessible, individualized wraparound educational and family services to youth in Burnaby
- provide activities and supports to assist youth and their families or caregivers to maintain or change behaviours; and
- assist youth to engage or re-engage in school, training or work environments
The program is a joint partnership between St. Leonard's Youth and Family Services, the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) and the Burnaby School District. Funding for the youth and family support staff is provided by MCFD while the school district provides the school teacher and all teaching supports.
Educational Program
All Outlook educational programming is curriculum-based and youth receive credit towards academic courses for their participation in each of the program components. The required courses for Grade 8 to Grade 12 in British Columbia are offered as well as the opportunity to write Provincial exams. The teacher develops specialized individualized educational plans that include full credit for CAP courses and physical education.
Summer Program
Youth receive at least 16 days of full schooling in the summer school program. In addition, group outings are offered each week that include recreational activities as well as other activities that focus on assisting youth to set achievable long term goals and undertake planning initiatives.
Family Strengthening and Support
Youth and Family Development staff meet with youth and their families after school hours often at their homes to assist in establishing goals that help to strengthen the family, to problem solve and stabilize the home environment. Staff also provide support for youth job searches, court appearances and therapeutic support.
